I LIKE TO WATCH, YOU KNOW?
July 29, 2010
Posted by Karl Marks

I've been very busy talking to lesbians about their obsession with gay male porn. Like the rest of us, many lesbians just can't get enough...gay porn. More visible now due to a scene in the new film, The Kids Are All Right, when Julianne Moore gives oral pleasure to Annette Benning while they watch two dudes fuck the shit out of each other, it's been surfacing for a while. Lots of arguments are given as to what's behind it: the projection of internal arousal onto obvious external signs of arousal, a dearth of realistic lesbian porn (not a convincing argument I've found), and the plasticity of female porn stars; but I encountered one lesbian with a point that I hadn't yet read. This tall butch fantasizes about the codes of behavior displayed in gay porn: cruising, hanky codes, eye contact, grunting, and fucking people whose names you don't even know...apparently it's harder to have that kind of sex as a gay woman (unless you're Michelle Tea) and this one lesbian said that's something she fantasizes about while rocking out to some fag porn. And we here at RAW think that's hot.

August 6 is the next installment of our RAW party. Check out the invite

DEEP, DEEP INSIDE OOFT!
July 20, 2010

Urban dictionary tells us that the meaning of the word (or phrase) "OOFT" means when one is impressed by something; when a person is taken back by something. RAW is certainly impressed when it comes to the blog house, production team, and DJs-extraordinaire that make up OOFT!.

Free Image Hosting by FreeImageHosting.net

Comprised of Ali Herron and Graeme "The Revenge" Clark, OOFT! (pictured above) have been soliciting edits, remixes, and original cuts since they were teenagers. It wasn't until early 2004 that their sounds were frequently heard in clubs throughout the UK, and their house-heavy, deep disco-funk trademark soon became ingrained in partygoers' heads throughout the world. Both have worked under various monikers throughout the past decade including: Deportivo Street Team, OOFT!, Cronk Family Enterprises, 6th Borough Project, and The Hong Kong Micros. Their monthly party in Glasgow (also under the moniker OOFT!) has been running strong for over a year now. Be sure to head over to JUNO to scoop up their EPs, singles, and full lengths; in the meantime, check out some of the tracks below!

INXS - Learn To Smile (OOFT edit)

SOS Band - High Hopes (Touchsoul edit/OOFT recut)

OOFT - Carlos vs Teddy

Melba Moore - Love's Comin' At Ya! (OOFT! Rework)

MATTHEW DEAR IS WRAPPED IN GOLD GIFT RIBBONS
July 13, 2010

Matthew Dear is set to release his new album Black City through Ghostly on August 17. It's the first album under his own name since 2007's amazing Asa Breed, but that doesn't mean he hasn't kept busy during those three years. Look for his other work under pseudonyms Audion and Jabberjaw.

RAW has two tracks from the new album for you: Little People (Black City), an epic 9-minute hypnotic gem with a throbbing bassline that builds and builds and I Can't Feel, a pared down track with classic Dear vocals woven with muted hammond organ chords, whizzes and beeps, plus a sassy bassline.

Other tracks in this post include Rally Rasser Good, a previously unreleased track from the recent Horizon Line/Ghostly By Night compilation; Don and Sherri, one of the highlights from his 2007 release; and Hurt, a fantastic compilation with Seth Troxler.

Matthew Dear - Little People (Black City)

HOT SUMMER IN THE CITY
July 9, 2010
Posted by Bil

This past Friday at our RAW party: the air was thick, the sex was hot, and the Green Lantern was a steaming celebration of disco, men, and sexual anticipation. With the sweltering DC summer settling completely upon us, I wanted to share some of my favorite hot-summer jams.

DARKLORD DISCO (aka Ryan T) lives in Philly and is one-half of Kung Fu Neckties' only weekly cosmic disco and cosmic rock party—ROBOTIQUE (which is one of RAW's fav parties too, so go and check it out). When I asked him about his song Outrun the Heat, this is what he has to say, "The song is a very simple edit of a tune called Speed Racer by Lu Janis...an elusive character, indeed...although really short (just under three minutes), the original song is pretty perfect, as is. So I don't consider it to be much of a re-working, but rather a version." If you're in DC, be sure to catch Ryan T and Billy W of ROBOTIQUE on Wednesday, August 18, at U Street Music Hall, as they navigate THE WHALE towards the deep end of cosmic disco.

I also picked out a hot mix of the Shirley Lite classic, Heat You Up (To Melt You Down). It's perfect for a daytime BBQ or a late-night galactic journey. Follow that with one of the slickest italo-disco, new wave influenced jams to come outta the 80's; replete with a stabbing bassline, drum machines, and deep-tinted vocal chants—Fokewulf 190. This song will heat you up and have your feet tapping to the beat before you even know it, a sure-fire chugger that will beckon your fingers to press repeat.

Can't wait for the next RAW in August? Catch the RAW DJs—Bil & Shea—spinning this Sunday, July 11, from 7–9 PM at Local 16 (1601 U Street NW) when The Pocket Gays present Oh Thank Heaven! Sunday School.

THE SPIRIT OF '76
July 2, 2010

On July 4, 1976, the U S of A turned 200 years old, celebrating its bi-sexual-centennial. America had a lot to celebrate: things like freedom, liberty, and stuff and things...but 1976 was also filled with really great music and culture that RAW thinks we should acknowledge.

This post lists ten things that RAW loves from 1976. We've also included some great tunes from that year to get you pumped for tonight's RED, WHITE, & RAW party. Get ready to shake your ass and blow out 234 candles in honor of America's birthday.

(Oh, and just want to give a photo credit to Robert Patrick. We found the above photo on his blog. It's him and his dog in July 1976).

DROPPING IN WITH GUEST DJ AUSTIN
June 30, 2010
Posted by DJ Austin

God damn its America's birthday! She runs on porn, good music, and alcohol...and has a bod for sin. If I could go back in time and snatch the quill from our forefathers' hands to rewrite the constitution, I have a feeling it would have been as follows:

1. Porn...EVERYWHERE
2. Citizens shall only function at night
3. Fog machines shall go off when you enter a room
4. One must have a shot with every beer
5. Get fucked up and dance

Thus RAW would be the perfect place for this new form of government.

As for our national anthem, I'm leaning toward one of these songs:

Peaches - Mommy Complex

Fukk Offf - Rave Is King

Das Racist feat. Chairlift - Fashion Party

DANCE IN YOUR UNDERWEAR
June 29, 2010

Reykjavik-based electro-pop trio FM Belfast formed in late 2005, and were just a studio project until the 2006 Iceland Airwaves Festival, when the band expanded into a full live act. In 2008, the group created World Champion Records and released their full length album, How To Make Friends, which is available in the US on Kimi Records. Their sound is a great mix of synth, pop, and dark electro. Songs are simple and very danceable.

The band recently debuted a brand new video for their single Underwear, with Stereogum (Vimeo version here), who noted that it's "lots of fun dancing, but it also strikes an eerie note, since it focuses on the ideas that: (a) lots of people dance alone, (b) in their underwear, and (c) not many people look beautiful dancing, especially once they're slowed down, sped up, or frozen. The result, however, is quite beautiful: Intimate, lonely, and still fun." Directed by DANIELS (production duo Daniel Scheinert and Dan Kwan), the video features heavily-manipulated footage of manic, bumbling and joyous solo dancers ending with them all in their skivvies.

FM Belfast is currently in the midst of festival tour across Europe and plans to hit the US later this year. Trend-setting Colette included the track Pump, a stripped-down and much slower version of Technotronic's Pump Up The Jam on their compliation Colette No. 10.

This Friday, RAW is back with another sleazy, disco party at the Green Lantern. It's gonna be hot and sweaty, perfect fro dancing in your underwear.

RAW REVIEW: SCISSOR SISTERS - NIGHT WORK
June 18, 2010

Scissor Sisters release their third album, Night Work, on June 29. Here's a track-by-track review of the new album by the RAW DJs (Shea Van Horn and Bil Todd). We've also got a few tracks for you to preview and a couple remixes to download. Be sure to buy the album when it comes out in a couple weeks.

Night Work

Bil: The opening track is signature Scissor Sisters: rocking guitar with a disco bass line, dueling vocals and earnest lyrics. A great opening with a promise for more gyrating dance pop and alt-disco. Grade: A

Shea: Strong pop song that sets a nice tone for the new album. I like the guitar. Not the most inspired song, it sounds like it could have been on a previous album, but definitely a solid track. Grade: B

A DARKER SHADE OF DISCO
June 16, 2010

There's no doubt that RAW gets hard for disco. We love it. We live it. We play it as much as we can. But our tastes fall well outside the limits of average disco, spilling into territories better-suited for blue pills and Gordons Vodka. Off-beat percussion to monotone pentameter to panning congos to hi-hats and hand-claps. As long as it feels good and has passion, we're into it.

Captain Sensible was best known for his involvement in the UK punk outfit The Damned. With a departure to focus on solo work in the 1980s, he transformed himself into an alternative pop singer with an uncanny, rebellious self image. His song Wot was actually a parody of a rap song, but it's chugging bassline and wah'd out guitar riff, coupled with some hot female refrains in the chorus, take this "parody" to an entirely different level—a heightened plateau of boogie and danceability.

The Tom Tom Club was the brainchild of husband-and-wife duo Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, who were also successful with another band you may have heard of here and there over time (The Talking Heads). This lovely cut, Lorelei, is an instrumental track from their 1981 self-titled album. It's also the rare and sought-after extended mix (for all you vinyl junkies out there), with limited availability as a B-side from the outdated cassette version.

Lastly we've got an erogenous and outright dirty cut from Marianne Faithfull. Why'd Ya Do It? is a punk-tinged, dark reggae song with lyrics from the poet Heathcote Williams. If you don't know who Marianne Faithful is, call in sick and tell your friends you'll be outta touch for a couple days. Treat yourself to a lengthy and pretty amazing story about a very intriguing, ever-changing and ground-breaking woman. With a name as dope as Marianne Faithful, you can only imagine what her bio will entail.

Captain Sensible - Wot (12-inch Extended Version)

Tom Tom Club - Lorelei (Instrumental Long Version)

Marianne Faithfull - Why'd Ya Do It? (Special 12-inch Version)

RAW BENDS OVER FOR COLBY KELLER
June 4, 2010

If you've been to a RAW party, then you've seen things like the Foreskin Finder, porn stars, local go-go dancers, the VHS video arcade, demos of guys getting their assholes shaved, and other things that we probably shouldn't put into writing. RAW likes to mix things up, and tonight, we're introducing the Colby Keller Spanking Throne. If you'd like to be spanked by Colby Keller, then just step inside the curtained area downstairs. Colby will be waiting for you. Don't expect him to talk to you. Just pull down your pants (or not) and lay across his lap. He'll take care of the rest.

Here is a picture of Colby Keller...

In addition to the Colby Keller Spanking Throne, we'll have some of our usual RAW treats for you: go-go dancers on both floors, guest DJ Sirlinda spinning on the first floor, resident DJs Bil and Shea upstairs, your host Karl Marks pouring free shots down your thirsty throat if you take off your shirt, and who knows what else might happen in the dark, fog-filled corners of the Green Lantern. We're always trying to give you MORE MORE MORE!

Here is a nice little spanking video to get you in the mood...and five spanking-themed songs (one for each finger of that firm hand that will smack your ass) to get your cheeks ready!

Free Blood - Quick & Painful

Peaches - Hit It Hard

Seth Troxler & Matthew Dear - Hurt

Telenoius - Hit Me (Cassian Remix)

The Knife - One Hit

GETTING GAY WITH DJ SIRLINDA
June 2, 2010

When the lovely, dirty boys of RAW asked me to come down (from New York City) and spin a set for them, I did what I know how to do best. I put on my shortest shorts, took off my shirt and fucking danced my faggy ass off, 'til my roommates broke up my party. It was early in the morning so don't judge, people. What I love most about RAW is that it embodies gay culture in the 70's, particularly in NYC. They stick to a dirty, in-your-face aesthetic that has woken up D.C.'s gay scene. RAW has become a place for homos from all across the country to come get down! I couldn't be more excited to be a guest DJ this month, so I'm just gonna share a few tracks with you that may make their way to the dance floor on Friday.

Since some NY flavor is going to be hitting the nation's capitol, I figured I would give you a couple tracks from my home town that most definitely need to be blasted at ear-piercing levels. First let me hit you with some ESG. The name stands for "Emerald, Sapphire & Gold," and the band consists of 3 sisters and a couple of their friends. They hail from the south Bronx and use polyrhythms as the base of their beats. (I know you see "poly" and get excited, but we're talking about music right now, fellas.) Their songs have had a huge influence on the disco/funk/post punk/new wave movement and these little mamas know how to fucking rock it out.

I know we're all familiar with Arthur Russell's genius. Although he wasn't a native, like most famous New Yorkers, he adapted himself pretty damn well. He was a classically-trained musician who showed that pop music could be artistic and fun at the same time. He formed Loose Joints in 1980 with Steve D'Aquisito and three singers. Is It All Over My Face? is a secret gem of NYC dance floors. If you haven't heard this track yet, get prepared for takeoff.

Don Armando was a first-generation American and a pure-bred New Yorker. He started playing percussion on the hot summer streets of East Harlem as a young boy. He was so skilled that he perfected his craft quite young. One of his brothers decided to follow in his footsteps and they to formed Don Armando's Second Avenue Band. It's just one of the many bands that Don Armando was a part of, but with this particular outfit, he composed I'm an Indian, Too, a song that makes me feel like it's summer every time I hear it. Enjoy!!!

ESG - Dance

Loose Joints - Is It All Over My Face? (Larry Levan Remix)

Don Armando Second Avenue Rhumba Band - I'm an Indian, Too (12" Mix)

ALL NIGHT LONG, EVERYBODY ROCK
June 1, 2010

Summer is officially here. Boys in jean shorts and shirtless men are taking to the streets, cruising the summer air during the early hours of the morning, and sharing poppers in deep-shaded parts of Rock Creek Park. Pop a fire hydrant and make some Knox Blox, these cuts are deep disco block party jams, perfect for the backyard of the Lantern!

Don't forget to set aside your sexiest pair of shorts for this Friday's RAW, it's gonna be a hot one! Check out a "safe-for-work" video of the "MEATRACK" cruising path in Fire Island and get inspired.

Popular Peoples Front - Showtime

JOHN MORALES - THE M&M MIXES
May 27, 2010

John Morales, NY producer and sound engineer, created and released M & M Mixes last November. It's a great compilation of 1980s post disco. On the radio, in the record racks, and most importantly on the dancefloor Morales' work (predominately with studio partner Sergio Munzibai) helped define an era and influence future generations of DJs, producers and artists.

Born in the Bronx, Morales, was so in love with the music he heard, as a 12-year old he persuaded his local record store to give him a part-time job with payment not in dollars, but in 45s. By the time he was old enough to get a full-time job his burgeoning record collection had helped land him one of his first DJ gigs at the influential Stardust Ballroom in the Bronx.

As his reputation grew Morales was invited downtown to Manhattan to play guest spots at the likes of Pippins, Bentleys, 1018, Limelight, and the infamous Studio 54. Like many DJs of the ‘70s John ventured into the studio more through need than necessity. Here's what he had to say about remixing: "I started to make medleys and remixes because the records in those days were too short, most in the 3-minute range, and being a DJ I needed to get more out of the records I was spinning. I first started to do my edits using the pause button a a Teac Cassette Deck...after many hours of self education I graduated and I purchased a Sony 1/4-inch reel-to-reel and learned to edit. It was hard work and long hours editing and putting all the little pieces of tape together and making something creative happen. Reflecting now, I realize how important it was to what I would later do. It taught me a lot about what I wanted to do and how to do it, so that by the time I got in a real studio I was virtually a whiz at editing tape much to the amazement of some of the engineers I worked with."

The M&M Mixes was originally released on November 11, 2009. It combines 19 previously unreleased tracks. Buy a copy on John's website.

Class Action feat. Chris Wiltshire - Weekend (JM After Session M&M Mix)

VINYL NYMPHO GETS DIGITAL
May 26, 2010

It's easy to lose hours on end staring into the illuminating hue of your computer screen, searching blogs and websites for early and hard to find vinyl rips. High quality versions with just enough grain to entice nostalgia, these songs can be surprising crowd pleasers and sometimes, eventually, personal favorites.

Disco Rock Machine was a disco-rock group from the mid to late seventies who scored hits with songs like Time To Love, Living for The City and Loving Styles. Their high energy arrangements and expansive instrumentation was accentuated by a strong vocal front and raw dance appeal, paving the way for a unique blend of classic rock, afro funk, and disco.

Brainstorm was a Detroit-based funk group with a couple of pleasant cuts from their best selling album, Stormin'. This track is full of jiving congos and percussive elements, a sure-fire dance floor pleaser. Brainstorm was also responsible for the soul classic, This Must Be Heaven, which is what RAW smells like. Anyway, following in the sleazy funk groove that we like to promote, Laurice Hudson gives us Feel My Love, over 7 minutes of beat driven, erotic slo-mo disco (if someone could just please edit out that guitar solo).

Disco Rock Machine - Living For The City

Brainstorm - Don't Let Me Catch You (RAW Mystery Edit)

TUESDAY'S CHILD IS FULL OF GRACE
May 25, 2010

Last Wednesday, Grace Jones turned 62. Words cannot describe how much RAW loves Ms. Jones. What an inspiring artist. The Jamaican-born goddess has been recording music since 1977, when she signed a record deal with Island Records. During those 33 years, she has made ten studio albums and given us phenomenal singles like Feel Up, Pull Up To The Bumper, I Need A Man, Slave To The Rhythm, My Jamaican Guy, and so many more. Here are three remixes to make your Tuesday a little more "full of GRACE."
